There we go again / Allá vamos otra vez

Hi folks,
I know I owe a few updates to this blog that I have left quite appart lately. There is plenty to say, about Asia, Norway, a few guests I had, the extraordinary ICEX meeting in Granda. Septiembre was just crazy, a non-stop sequence of trips and parties which partially destroyed my health. When all this get back to normality I would like to post about all these issues, right now the most important thing is the beggining of a new stage in my life, tomorrow I am leaving to Stockholm where I will spend the next year. As it happened before with England, Germnay or Denmark, I start from scrach. New country, new friends, everything new, the truth is that… I love it. I write this in companion of my last glass of Brugal in this apartment I talked about so much
, waitting for my friend Tomás, who is visiting me for a short time, to finish his shower, waitting to enjoy danish night for the last time (in a while). I dont pretend this to sound too intelligent, I already talked before about these feelings I am having now. Whoever never had this feeling of departing for the unknown, leaving home, the usual places, good friends, get away of what “everybody else does”… according to my modest opinion he is not making the most of his life. This way of living, my friends, becomes addictive, is pretty hard to explain with words why is so cool to live in different places, to build a life in a new place just to destroy it and start again later on. It is not that I believe myself to be better than these people which consider going to the same local beach year after year to be the big adventure but, honestly folks, what I do is worth it. Becouse through all these trips you gain experiences, get to know people, open your mind.. Because of course the moment to settled down in a fixed place will come in the end but life is so long that I dont see any need to speed up this. And I like to think that, when the time comes and I look back, I wont regret of what I didnt do. So, what do I keep from Denmark? Well, quite a few even though I havent spend too much time here because of so many trips. I have the feeling this is a country I would not mind to live in, I felt more comfortable in two months here than in two years in England. It is definitely a nice place. No offence but I honestly believe Spain is worse than people usually believe. Sure we have good weather and great food but quality of living is a wider concept, it includes wroking conditions, how easy is to get independent, friendliness of people..and if you tell me about that “spanish party” topic, let me reply that here in Copenhagen is not too different. I was in Madrid this week and I felt totally out of place, the why is hard to explain in words, is more about feelings, maybe because the capital is not the best place in our country. People go fast all the time, the environment is different, dont ask me exactly why but it is, anyone who had lived in Copenhagen would understand me. Concerning the social circle, in this experience it has been more reduced but, as it happened to me some other times, every new experience add a couple of characters to the bunch of people I consider unconditional friends. Obviously, among all these people I got to know over all these years, I only keep in touch with a few of them. And it does not mean that the others are less valuable, is just the way life is. But there are certain guys I know they will always be there whenever the circumstances make a meeting possible. I could mention Sergio or Lolo from Newcastle, Álex, Ángel or Paul from Cardiff, a lot of people from Icex…
Copenhagen left Giorgos and Iván, two great guys I have been hanging arround with this summer. I know their door will be always open for me the same way mine is for them, and whoever knows me also knows I am serious when I say these kind of things. And this is the really nice thing about this way of living, you keep adding different characters to the cocktail of the friends, maybe you wont see some of them anymore but the experiences remain.
Anyway, big Tomi is ready to go out and the Brugal empty. I depart to say bye to the vikings land and I get ready for the swedish one. Cheers…

ICEX Meeting at Granada

Amazing the ICEX IT people meeting in my spanish favourite city. I wont tell you how it was, you can check this out (if you read Spanish
) at Marta´s blog (day 1, day 2, day 2 night, day 3) and Guatemala´s blog. What I want to say here is that actually having fun is a pretty simple thing. It is not about get drunk and party very hard, someting we already did of course, in fact you enjoy more and remember better all these moments of jokes and conversations. From the beginning, when Pekin was trying to park his car, until the end, those last conversations before leaving the apartments. In the middle, all kind of stuff, Marta and Shangai spicy talk, those tapas lunches, talks over a Cachimba. Finally, what I really matter is the people you get together. The place is not so important althouth in this case it could not have been better. The truth is that I was pretty pissed off when I knew I had to spend month and a half attending a boring trainning in Madrid but now I am very happy I did it. Because of so many people I got to know, most of them with my same interests and way of seeing life, because of all the stuff we did and all the stuff we will do, because know I can have a look at a map of the world knowing that I have a friend in most of the places. Anyway, I dont wanna get boring with this, I already talked a lot about this issue. I will just leave you with Dubai´s video and soon I will uplodad some pictures. A big hug for all the ICEX 2006 IT promotion which soon will be spread all over the world!
Bangkok, the City

As I said Bangkok is a big experience for all the senses, plenty of different people hang arround the city. And I hardly experience it, only a couple of days and I limited myself to Khao San Road and the touristic areas. I am sure there are plenty of more typicals neibourghoods to explore but I had enough with this. In Bangkok the mean of transporation you normally use is the tuk-tuk, a sort of motorbike with room for passangers. Uncomfortable but cheap as long as you first negociate the price with the driver, the traffic is a hell, there is so much smoke because of the cars that drivers normally use masks…

And about the food… bufff, everything was delicious and very cheap. I got full eating typical thai dishes and of course I tried all the different brands of beer…

Bangkok is a very budist city, there are temples everywhere where you find people praying and offering stuff to the good, the truth is that the spread arround a very pefaceful feeling. I dont want to get into a teological discussion here but it is quite remarkable the comparation between the smiling and fat Budda and the suffering Jesus in the cross. I believe that just the symbols say a lot about how these two religions understand life. But as I said, I wont get into these issues because I can easily get entusiastic and I dont wanna offend anyone.

About monuments, the Bangkok Royal Palace is very remarkable, probably one of the wonders of the world, amazing although too full of tourist as it was expected. Anyway, a must see, by the way you can not get there with short trousers, you are forced to wear a long ones…

It is also very advisible to spend some money in a cruise arround the river. Very typical…

From the Golden Mount you can get a view of the city…

So this was all about the asian tour, the global balance is possitive although, to be completely honest, I was expecting more out of the trip. Many unlucky things and not so good planification, but I dont regret about it, it´s been such an experience to find out how people live here.
My dear Copenhagen was waitting for me when I got back ![]()

Bangkok: Scotish Birthday / Cumpleaños Escocés
8 September 2006 9:39 AM | In Bangkok, Nightlife, Travel | 106 Comments
What a better way to celebrate my 26 birthday that going for an adventure in one of the most amazing cities I have ever visited. I have travelled quite a lot but never like this, totally alone, withouth knowing anyone in the place and withouth having accommodation there. I just had the address of what was supposed the street with hotels for foreign people in Bangkok. A typical backpacker place called Khao San Road. How to describe this city in a few words… amazing. It was only a couple of days but I got the impression that Bangkok is a place you either hate or fall in love with. Absolutely caotic, pollution everywhere, huge, you walk arround smelling every kind of stuff, with people trying to sell you whatever you may want. I got to Kaho San where, as I had read, there was foreign people all over and many affordable places to stay. The street itself is amazing, lights everywhere, backpackers coming and going, thai food places and every kind of shops. Definitely the place had nothing to do with the very tidy and clean Singapore, this is another world.

So I get my individual room, with AC and shower. Not luxury but fair enough..

Can you imagine how I spent the rest of the afternoon? Buying a new camera of course, first contact with the tahi culture, here you can negociate any price. Luckily, the change euro - bath (thai currency) is quite convinient so in the end you get good deals. After that, it was my birthday and I was about to celebrate it alone, besides, I was totally exhausted and sweating like hell. 10 pm, what should I do? Going to sleep? That would be sad… I decided to get down to the hotel bar and have a drink, this is also cheap here. So I sit down there, totally alone and sad and I start ordering mojitos. The good thing about these kind of places is that there are many people in the same situation, you see them hanging arround, having dinner alone or reading a book, normally after a while they leave. After I spent some time studying the situation and only when I got the inspiration that only a good rum can provide I started to expand my non-existing social circle. First I spoke with a lonely american guy, jajaja jojojojo and later on we also became friends of a group of scottish guys, finally we went out with them. So the night ended up been quite funny, much more than it was mean to be. Nothing spectacular, some temporarly friends so I dont spend my birthday alone ![]()

Singapore, the City
3 September 2006 9:30 AM | In Singapore, Travel | 55 Comments
Singapore is actually a very occidental city, with a financial district full of skycrappers, looking a little like New York, plenty of commercial areas and a mixed environment in which it is not too strange to spot european people walking on the streets…

Singapore skylne
Paul and me
The lion is the symbol of Singapur
Only two neibourghoods can be considered more asian: Chinatown and the malasian area. But, in the end, they both happen to be just a bunch of shops trying to make money out of tourists…

And of course a visit to the beach was a must, with a souvenir for my dear ICEX friends…

Finally a nice city view from the sky…

Singapore: La maldición de Brugal / The Brugal curse
2 September 2006 9:25 AM | In Nightlife, Singapore, Travel | 55 Comments
Saturday I wope up a little wasted after the wild night, I head to my bag in order to get some clothes and then it happened, one of my three very valuable rum bottles which had travelled from Copenhagen fell in the floor, kinda of slow motion, it was not even in a high position but on the floor. I dont understad how it could get broke, I can believe it survived to a very long trip with connection included just to get broke like this later on. What a mess!! They say breaking a mirror is seven years bad luck, for me, breaking a Brugal was nearly a week. From this moment nothing went right. And the situation was promising at that point, that night we drunk one of the survivors bottles and went to another house where we were gonna meet some Paul´s friends. Very singapurean night, it was me sorrounded by asians, later on we were supposed to meet the ICEX guy in Singapur at Clark Quay, Saturday night, best day for going out in Singapore, but everything fucked up… First, we made one of Pauls friends become Flint, the first one made in Asia. After that, and following the normal sequence, we played the blowing cards game… and once again this innocent game fucked up the night. For those of you who dont know it, the game consist on blowing cards in a bottle, the one who blows the last card or blows all of them has to drink a shot. I am going to consider wether to use this game again. Paul ended up totally fucked up and their friends were not in a good condition either, terrible show of people puking. There was no way to move them to meet the ICEX guy so that was the very sad end of the night. Better forget about it…

Singaporean party…

Ben, the new flint

Playing cards..

Wasted…
Next morning I wake up realizing that the night before one of my fingers had got seriously burn, funny thing because I dont smoke. Anyway, that day I was supposed to by my new digital camera. It is quite a worry thing how I keep loosing cameras, it´s been two already, both cases occurred during these “confusing” nights I have from time to time. So I get this really cool Fujifilm camera with plenty of megapixels and the most sophisticated stuff at a really good price. I get into a taxi to go back home and when I get there… the fucking camera is missing!. Unbelievable but true, I was able to loose it in less than an hour, with no alcohol involved. I am still wondering why, I guess I forgot it in the taxi but honestely, I looked back before I got down. Due to my past experiences I was pretty paranoic about it, I remember Paul and me joking about this after I bought it. As you can imagine, loosing more than 200 euros, didnt improve my mood. We wasted a lot of time going back to the place to unsuccessfully look for the camera. It was not only the money but the frustration, the feeling that Murphy is arround you, everything likely to go wrong will go wrong and there is not situacion bad enough so it can not get worse.
The rest of the week in Singapore was not too special, Paul was still sick becuase of the Saturday night and every time we went out there wasnt any people arround, just very annoying indonesian hookers. Looking back now it is quite clear I should have travelled more arround, maybe a tip to Malasia which was more or less close by, too many days in Singapore where there are not so many things to visit. In fact there was a morning I get to the bus at 6, triying to catch the earliest bus going to Kuala Lumpur but of course it had ben cancelled and the next one was not departing until 10. I went home very pissed off.
Therefore, the only good thing about these days was the hospitality I received from Paul´s family (thanks a lot) and the gastronomic tour arround Singapore, I tasted many different asian dishes, very spicy ones as I like the food. The situation required a change and this change would be my lonely trip to the capital of Thailand: Bangkok.
Singapore: Arrival and First Night
1 September 2006 9:16 AM | In Nightlife, Singapore, Travel | 432 Comments
And the time came, Thursday, 30th September, 10 pm, Copenhagen airport, first stop of a trip which finally will allow me to travel out of Europe. I have a 9 hours flight to Bangkok and then another 2 hours to get to Singapore, my final destination, where my good friend Paul is waitting. Is OK, the Scandinavian Airlines plane has a lot of entertaiment available: different movies to choose, games, musin channels, I have a very big book Iván gave me but…as soon as I get to my seat I fall totally sleep just to wake up with the captain saying that we are landing in Bangkok
. Good way to do a trip, I guess the fact that I only slept 2 hours the night before due to a very hard party night had something to do with this. Anyway, I am already in Bangkog, short yellow persons are all over the place, I have a 2 hours wait until my next flight, what can I do? Answer is pretty clear, I am taking a thai massage. There is a place in the middle of the aiport with some women given foot and back massages to the tired travellers. Half an hour for 5 or 6 euros, after that I dont really know wheter I am relaxed or totally fucked up. This is the way thai massage are, there are moments in which the woman is really hurting you a lot, maybe there is a bit of masochism in this thing. But the truth is that, even though you stand up believing your back will be hurting for a few days, later on you realize you actually feel more relaxed.
So, after the short thai experience I get into another plane and I reach Singapore. Paul is waitting for me in the aiport, we get into a taxi and we head to his place. I am surprised to see talk is using English with the taxi driver. The truth is that Singapore is a very “british” city, consequence of have been a colony of this country for many years. Everything is written in English, they drive like them and Paris Hilton new cd is announced everywhere. Paul lives in a complex of high buildings (this city is mostly high buildings) with swimming pool and very well located, close to the center. After an easy afternoon we get ready for going out in Clark Quay, very touristic area. International environment and very expensive and bad drinks, 8 euros Bacardi with too much ice. Anyway, I use my wallet to get into the mood. I managed to get friends with some british girls (I guess there is something useful about having lived there so many years) and they get us into a very nice place called Attica for free. There I talk with some Spanish guys. When I am about to order something I see this guy who apparently bought a whole bottle of Absolut Vodka for himself, he has about 8 glasses in front of him. When he sees me he asks me wheter I am up to the challenge, with a lot of sacrifice I help him to get rid of such a heavy task. Very friendly guy, we get friends and oh! surprise! he is british! Funny thing, 3 years in that country I only need one night in Singapore to socialize with those people more than in that whole period. Anyway, it happens to be a very funny night, laughs, shots and with the british who is in the company of his wife. Nobody would say she is that cause she is dancing with me very close while he is just looking and smiling, I guess is some kind of game between them. I dont get into trouble and just drink vodka and talk with the Spanish until the place close down. As I said, a funny night ![]()
Because of the british guy I lost Paul who went home earlier. Once again I have to find my way in a unknown city when been pretty drunk. Is OK, Paul´s place is not far away. But when I am getting there I see this Asian girl, arround 16 and totally fucked up next to the road. She is almost unconscious with her stuff spread all ove the floor. My drunk mind requires me to help her, I sit down whith her, get her stuff back in the bag and take her in my arms out of the road so no car can kill us. Few times I have seen someone so fucked up, she has no control over what she says or does, she is a total zombie. I am not exagerating when I say I probably spent about an hour trying her to tell me her address so I could order a taxi. I have no idea if she really understands english or not but since I am also quite drunk I get very stubborn and dont leave her alone. Finally she reacts, I manage to get her up and then, suddendly, she embraces me and start crying like hell, telling me a lot of stuff in chinesse. I would really like to know what was going on with the poor girl. So we stay in this weird situation quite a few time until I finally see a taxi, I get her inside not before I make sure she already remembers her address. And then, when the taxi is leaving she looks at my face for the first time from the window and say goodbye with her hand to this guy she will never see again and she probably wont remember tomorrow. Maybe this sounds ridiculous written like this but at that ime, 8 am, and in such a remote place, I felt I was the most decent man in the world. I got home feeling I had done the good thing of the year…
